Apr 202012

This is the first of what we hope will be many member profiles illustrating the breadth and depth of our membership – many thanks to Louise for submitting this.

Louise, aged 30 of Redditch has been competing in triathlon for nearly 18 months and has been a member of Worcester Tri club since summer 2011.   Her first middle distance triathlon was the Full Boar in September 2011 completed in 6 hours 10 mins.  Then came the Stratford to Stratford Cycle challenge (London to Upon-Avon) in October 2011 – more of a challenge than a race but Louise was fastest female on both days (she got in with a good group of guys!)

At the Stratford Raceways 10k in November 2011 Louise achieved a PB of 56 mins 37 then came another PB in the Droitwich Half Marathon in March 2012 – 2 hours 9 mins.

Louise feels that she has progressed well in such a short amount of time considering that she couldn’t swim with her head under water 18 months ago and that she’s not from a cycling or running background (5k was a challenge 18 months ago).

This year Louise will be doing the Stratford Marathon on 29th April and the Cotswolds Middle Distance Triathlon on 24th June – good luck to her in both events!

The date has now been set for the Club’s Annual Dinner to be held at the Vale Golf Club near Bishampton as Saturday 11th February 2012.

I am pleased to announce that the committee have agreed to subsidise the cost of the three course dinner to £15 for adult members (+1st guest) and £10 for junior members. Non-members are very welcome @ £17 per head.

Our guest speaker is to be confirmed hopefully in the next week or so due to the late withdrawal of our planned speaker but we very much hope our speaker will be able to shares their experiences of international competition. As soon as confirmed I will update everyone accordingly. The event starts at 7pm and directions to the club are available here http://www.thevalegolf.co.uk/thevale_contact.htm

During the evening we will be presenting the Club awards for the 2011 season and the ever popular Raffle (please let me know if you want to donate a prize). This year we will also be making special awards to all our junior members. They will however have to be present to collect their awards in person.

Tickets are now available by either emailing Les Bailey les.bailey1@btinternet.com or alternatively give him a ring (07976 894 997) or catch up with him at one of the club’s training sessions.

Your earliest responses would be greatly appreciated together with any special dietary requirements so that we can inform the club well in advance.

The USN Nutrition Centre as seen at Dorney Lake

We have been working hard behind the scenes to get the Top Barn Triathlons ready for 2012 and it goes live TONIGHT at 6pm, at www.entrycentral.com (search for ‘Worcester’).

We have booked the Top Barn Activity Centre for Sunday 24th June 2012 and we have exclusive use of the facilities for the afternoon before and the morning of the race. We will be working closely with the Centre to make sure the race runs as smoothly as possible and we get the most out of their considerable facilities. We have also secured the venue for another 3 years, ensuring this very popular race stays firmly on the race calendar for years to come.

We are also very excited to announce that USN (Ultimate Sports Nutrition) – an international brand offering energy, endurance and nutrition products will be supporting the race in 2012. They will have a team of staff and their branded mobile education centre on site (as seen in the photo above) to provide advice during the event and will also help out with goodie bags and water stations. They may even bring some of their USN sponsored athletes to compete in the race!

We are also talking to Scimitar Sports Clothing about supplying the event t-shirts again and XTERRA wetsuits about further sponsorship and will hope to update you on these soon.

We are keeping the course the same as previous years, subject to approval from the council highways and police departments so the course will be there to test yourself against the recent race winners and your own previous personal bests! Given the success of recent years the committee have also agreed that we can make the race slightly larger so we will be requesting permission for 375-400 entries for 2012. This might mean we will need more marshalling help from the Worcester Tri Club members but given this race is our biggest, most prestigious and most complicated to organise hopefully they will agree that it is well worth being a part of!

We will also be offering an early-bird discount  of £5 for anyone who enters the race before 15th January 2012.

We will update you when the race goes live, look out for us in 220 Magazine and follow us on Twitter @Top_Barn_Tri.

More to come soon, enjoy your training!

Club welfare officer Rachel Ward is running her 5th London Marathon next month and raising money for Multiple Sclerosis. She has chosen this charity for personal and medical reasons. Sadly this disease has affected a good friend and last year a patient she had nursed for 20 yrs finally died.

As many of you will be aware her running/training has been blighted by a silly achilles problem plus too much work! But she will still go out there and do the best she can.

Please go on to her Just Giving page here.

All the best Rachel

The Worcester Triathlon Club subscription year runs from 1st January to 31st December therefore 2011 subs are now over due.
It is necessary to fill in a new form as the club must have signed confirmation that all your details are correct. The membership renewal form can be downloaded here – Membership Renewal Form.
Either post your completed return to Phil Parsons with a cheque for the correct fee (NB discounts for BTF membership no longer apply) or hand deliver to any committee member.

Related to this, from the 16th April guests or non-members will be charged £3 for swimming. This is inline with other activities and still offers good value to swim in a organised laned session, but should also act as encouragement to join properly (or renew).
Any existing members who have not renewed by 16th April will be deemed to have lapsed their membership and be required to pay the increased charge.

As the new season approaches and the weather improves, I am in the process of ordering some more cycling and triathlon clothing. Now is the time to act if you would like anything; the manufacturer needs a few weeks to produce and deliver the clothing, in time for this season. Champion Systems have increased their range considerably and have made some changes to some items so check out the range at http://champ-sys.co.uk/ and contact me asap if you would like to order anything.

Unfortunately, there are some price rises, but the club heavily subsidises our kit, so it is excellent value for extremely high quality kit, used by the professionals.

Fortunately, I have quite a range of kit in stock at the OLD prices, see list below. Just email me (jim.chalmers@hotmail.com) and I can arrange a time for you to see, try on and buy.

Welcome to the new revamped Worcester Triathlon Club website. This is much more than a cosmetic update. The overhaul enables us to keep things more up to date and adds a lot of new features. There will be some further tuning over the next few weeks. If you have comments, suggestions or spot any problems please let me know at webmaster@worcestertriclub.co.uk
